A comprehensive shorebird survey was last completed across the region in 1989-1995\, but much has changed in the past 30 years. This Shorebird Survey is replicating the census of the past so we can better manage shorebirds into the future. \nThe shorebird survey objectives are: \n\n\nDocument the distribution and abundance of shorebirds at over 200 survey areas during the spring and fall migrations from 2022-2026. \n\n\nUse survey data to compare distribution and abundance with the historical shorebird survey from 1989-1995. \n\n\nIdentify factors that influence abundance of shorebirds. \n\n\nWe are recruiting volunteers to survey at wetland sites across the West. Join us and be a part of the collective impact!

DESCRIPTION:Caterpillars are the single most important insect in the diet of most terrestrial birds\, yet our knowledge of these larval marvels often begins and ends with The Very Hungry Caterpillar. So\, let’s get caught up on the latest research. We’ll explore the life cycles of each of the 160\,000 species of caterpillars (or at least a few of the best-known)\, discuss why these bristly sausages are so vital to nestling diets\, and learn a few simple ways we can boost caterpillar populations in our own backyards.  LeeAnn Kriegh is a woolly bear enthusiast and author of The Nature of Bend and The Nature of Portland. She’ll have the 2025 editions of both books available for sale at the talk. \nThe program will start at 6pm. Feel free to come early for dinner and a beverage. There is typically a nice group there by 5:00pm or so. \nAnd Worthy Brewing offers a nice Happy Hour Menu from 3-6pm.

SUMMARY:Crooked River Wetlands Guided Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:In 2026\, Wetlands Walks will be held on the first and third Saturdays of the month starting in April and running through September. The first walk will be April 4\, 2026 and the last walk of the year will be September 19\, 2026. No walks October through March. \nWalks will begin at 8:00AM and conclude at 10:00AM.  We gather at 7:45AM at the Crooked River Wetlands\nPavillion at 4035 NW Rimrock Acres Loop in Prineville. Walks will be about 2 miles. \nThere is no drinkable water at this facility so bring water and dress for Central Oregon\nweather.  A 4-person golf cart is available to carry those who can’t walk the distance. \nFor more information (including reserving space on the golf cart)\, contact Chuck Gates at 541-280-4957. DESCRIPTION:Ospreys and Osprey Watch \nLearn about osprey natural history and how you can get involved in the community science project Osprey Watch. This project helps us monitor these incredible sentinel species and better understand environmental trends across the region. We’ll also be joined by Elise Jackson from Pacific Power\, who will share information about Pacific Power’s Avian Protection Program and how community monitoring efforts contribute to the survival of our native birds. \nKylie Lanuza is the Wildlife Community Science Project Coordinator for Think Wild.  Elise Jackson is an Associate Environmental Analyst with Pacific Power. \nThe program will start at 6pm. Feel free to come early for dinner and a beverage. There is typically a nice group there by 5:00pm or so.  And Worthy Brewing offers a nice Happy Hour Menu from 3-6pm.
