SUMMARY:Crooked River Wetlands Saturday Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:We lead walks every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month from April through\nOctober.\nDue to frigid conditions\, we only meet on the 1st Saturday in\nNovember and March.\nThere are no walks offered in December through February. \n\nIn Apr-Oct\, we meet at 7:45am and start the 2-hour walk at 8:00am\nIn Nov. and March\, we meet at 9:45 and start at 10:00AM \nSome Important Information:\n1. No experience is necessary.  We usually have at least 2 experienced\nleaders who will tell you what birds you are seeing and lots of fun\nfacts about them.  We have loaner binoculars for you to use.\n2. If mobility is a problem\, we have a 4-person golf cart that trails\nthe group and can offer rides to anyone who gets tired or sore. The cart\nwas purchased to carry people who could not otherwise access the\ncomplex.  If a participant would like to ride the whole trip\, please\ncontact Chuck Gates at 541-280-4957 or CRWCTOURS@cityofprineville.com to\nreserve a seat.\n3. Participants are welcome to peel away from the group at any time and\ngo on their own.  They do not have to go the entire two hours.\n4. There is no charge for this event. What’s so intriguing about these feathered marvels? Most baby birds are hidden from view\, yet each undertakes a unique and extraordinary developmental journey. From the cozy warmth of the nest to the exhilarating first flight to the bird’s hatch-year challenges\, we’ll explore the remarkable transformation of some of these tiny bundles of fluff into graceful avian wonders. We will delve into the fascinating uniqueness of baby birds as they navigate the challenges of fledging the nest and becoming self-sufficient. Join us as we celebrate the boundless wonders of some of our most interesting baby birds. \nElise Wolf has been a wildlife and habitat advocate for 30 years. In 2009\, she expanded into also caring for individual birds in need. After training with another rehabilitator for two years\, she founded Native Bird Care and started on an educational path to  work with birds that were in decline and help fill a critical gap in wildlife rehabilitation. Her training includes hands-on training with some of the top rehabilitators in the country\, along with multiple conferences and specialized research and study. \nElise is fascinated with the science behind every species of birds she cares for. To date\, she has treated 127 individual species (types) of birds\, from hummingbirds up to Trumpeter Swans. She personally writes the Native Bird Care blog and posts on Facebook\, applying her extensive knowledge about birds and other important issues. The Source and Nugget Newspapers in Central Oregon publish her writings as well. Community presentations are offered a couple of times a year. ONDA’s Stewardship Director\, Gena Goodman-Campbell\, will delve into the current steps ONDA is taking to restore Oregon’s high desert in partnership with local tribes. \nDr. Cristina Eisenberg is the Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence and Maybelle Clark Macdonald Director of Tribal Initiatives in Natural Resources at Oregon State University in the College of Forestry (CoF) and Professor of Practice. In the CoF she is the director of the Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) Lab\, and the Indigenous Natural Resource Office. As a Native American and Latinx ecologist\, she leads several long-term ecological restoration projects\, including the BLM /OSU/Fort Belknap Grassland Restoration Project on the Northern Plains of Montana\, and the Pacific Northwest Tribal Conservation Corps Pilot Project for Seeds of Success\, which involves working with five of the Tribal Nations in Oregon. All the projects she leads incorporate Indigenous Knowledge (IK) and best Western science into ecocultural restoration practice. She works with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy\, the US Forest Service\, the US Congress\, and the Bureau of Land Management to advise them on IK and Tribal Sovereignty and how to partner with Tribal Nations. Cristina is a Director at Large on the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) Board of Directors. Join ONDA Board Members\, Elisa Cheng and Natasha Bellis\, at a 2024 High Desert Speaker Series event as they reflect on their spring rafting trip down the Owyhee River on an exploration of this incomparable region. They’ll discuss the Owyhee’s awe-inspiring natural landscapes\, rich culture and history\, key wildlife habitats and many recreation opportunities. Karly Foster\, ONDA’s Campaign Manager\, will share conservation advocacy initiatives you can support to counter threats to the region and ensure that the Owyhee is protected. \nAbout the Presenters\nElisa Cheng grew up in California and Hawaii. She launched her web design career in 2002 spending a few years at an eCommerce company before realizing that her passion was in helping non-profits. From there she moved into a role helping non-profits of all sizes with their online presence. She now works as a digital consultant helping small businesses and non-profits expand their digital presence through SEO\, marketing\, web design\, social media\, and digital strategy. Elisa moved to Bend\, Oregon from Honolulu\, Hawaii in 2010 and loves all of the outdoor opportunities right out her door in Bend. \nGrowing up in Wyoming and Utah\, Natasha Bellis gained an early appreciation for wild and open spaces. Cultivating a love of the desert by roaming the canyon lands of southern Utah\, she was inspired to pursue a career in environmental studies and has spent the past 20 years working to conserve and protect natural resources. Natasha is currently a Program Manager with the Deschutes River Conservancy where she works to restore streamflow to Oregon’s rivers and streams by negotiating instream water right transactions and helping to shape state water law and policy. Natasha holds a masters of science in environmental studies from the University of Montana and a JD from Lewis and Clark Law School with a certificate in Environmental and Natural Resource Law. As a former law clerk with ONDA\, Natasha is excited to return to the organization as a board member. \nAs ONDA’s Campaign Manager\, Karly Foster develops and executes conservation campaign initiatives across millions of acres of Oregon’s high desert public lands at the local\, regional and national levels and with Tribal Nations\, by building relationships with diverse stakeholders and community partners to secure protection for public lands\, waters and wildlife. Karly grew up in the western Willamette Valley and as a fourth-generation Pacific City\, Dory-fisher\, her summers were spent fishing with her family in the Pacific Ocean. She received her bachelor’s in socio-cultural anthropology and Indigenous Nations studies at Portland State University. During undergrad\, she attended Tatoosh School in the Tongass National Forest\, studying southeast Alaska ecology and policy of place. Karly followed the coastal winds and eventually lived on organic farms in Aotearoa (New Zealand)\, where her views of what conservation\, natural resource management\, and Indigenous rights can look like\, expanded. Karly graduated from the McCall Field Campus of the University of Idaho with a master’s degree in environmental science and a certificate in environmental education and science communications in 2022. Her next stop was a research assistantship with a National Science Foundation grant in the Rocky Mountains\, which reignited her love for the ponderosa pine forests and sagebrush meadows she’d grown up with while camping in Central Oregon. We will feature talks each Wednesday evening in January\, with the exception of the final talk being held on Thursday\, February 1st. \nDr. Frank Fogarty will zoom in for this movie night style talk. GBBO will host and provide snacks. We will also have a fun bird trivia challenge! \nDr. Fogarty has conducted a substantial amount of research on birds in the Great Basin. He is currently an Assistant Professor at California State Polytechnic University at Humboldt. Dr. Fogarty will talk about riparian areas around creeks\, seeps\, and snow pockets that cover just a small fraction of the Great Basin’s mountains yet are a key resource for much of its avian diversity.
