SUMMARY:Summer Lake Shorebird Survey
DESCRIPTION:Where:  Summer Lake Wildlife Area \nWhat:  Volunteers conduct counts of all shorebirds and other waterbirds (excluding waterfowl and American coots) across the entire Summer Lake Wildlife Area. \nWhen: Saturday & Sunday\, May 30 and 31\, 2026 \nWhy:    The survey was established in 2009 to monitor breeding shorebird and other waterbird populations and to document bird responses to habitat enhancement and management actions in each of Summer Lake Wildlife Area’s habitat management units. The Summer Lake Shorebird Survey has been conducted annually (except in 2020) since 2009. \nOn average\, over 3\,100 shorebirds representing the 9 breeding species have been counted.  In addition\, about 5 non-breeding shorebird species have been found each year.   \nSince 2009\, a total of 22 different shorebird species have been recorded including uncommon or rare species such as red knot\, wandering tattler and whimbrel. \nOther waterbirds such as waders\, gulls & terns\, grebes\, pelicans & cormorants\, sandhill cranes and rails are also counted and average over 1\,300 individuals and over 20 species. \nHow: Volunteers count from vehicles along roads\, and/or by foot hiking along dikes and levees\, cross country and/or wading through marsh and shallow ponds to survey all types of wetland habitat.  Volunteers willing to survey by wading/hiking (for 3 or 4 hours) into distant (1 to 2 miles from dikes/roads) are especially needed. \nIn the past\, bicycles\, canoes and kayaks have been used in some areas. \nBinoculars are essential and the use of spotting scopes in many areas is encouraged.     \nVolunteers meet at River Campground on Summer Lake Wildlife Area at 7:30 am and are assigned specific areas to survey. \nHistorically\, some volunteers have camped one of the Wildlife Area’s four primitive sites. Others have chosen commercial lodging at the Lodge at Summer Lake. \nIn the past\, the group found about 120 species of birds throughout the weekend of counting and birding. \nPlease contact Marty St. Louis for additional details and information. \nPO Box 68\, Summer Lake\, OR 97640 \nCell phone: (541)-219-0879 or email: stlouismartin541@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Birders' Night: How to count four and a half million raptors… Veracruz and its River of Raptors with Steve Dougill
DESCRIPTION:How to count four and a half million raptors… Veracruz and its River of Raptors with Steve Dougill. \nNorth America hosts the largest raptor migration in the world each fall in Veracruz\, Mexico. But it’s a lot more than just the birds of prey; there’s millions of migrating songbirds and storks and pelicans and anhinga … and clouds of dragonflies and colorful butterflies. It’s also a compelling story of the biologists who grew up in the small rural communities\, and the non-profit that runs the counts\, the education programs\, forges conservation partnerships with local land owners\, and hosts several MOTUS towers. Steve was lucky enough to work here for a season and so he will bring you the story and explain how to count millions of migrating raptors. \nAbout Steve.  He grew up birding\, as a young kid in the UK\, and has been keen on wildlife and conservation ever since.  He has worked in many different wildlife positions around the world in both paid and volunteer capacity and now splits his time between getting paid to work with endangered birds in Southern Nevada in the summer and leading birds tours for part of the winter.  In between\, he bases himself in eastern Washington\, close to the Idaho State border.  He is very energized to share birds and their conservation with others and has been president of a local Audubon group in Oregon as well as heading up some fun citizen  science projects.  He does these tours because he loves sharing; he loves birding with an energetic group; and\, he loves supporting the local guides and non-profits he partners with. His next goals are to work more directly with kids\, to get his book published and to teach a beginning birding class to engage others in the love of birds. \nThe program will start at 6pm. Feel free to come early for dinner and a beverage. There is typically a nice group there by 5:00pm or so. \nSeating is first come\, first serve\, so come early! \nAnd Worthy Brewing offers a nice Happy Hour Menu from 3-6pm.

SUMMARY:Birders' Night: Tracking Lewis’s Woodpecker Migration Using Motus Technology with Kaly Adkins
DESCRIPTION:Birders’ Night: Tracking Lewis’s Woodpecker Migration Using Motus Technology with Kaly Adkins \nCome learn about how wildlife biologists from the state\, a variety of NGOs and Cal Poly Humboldt have collaborated to learn about migratory pathways of Lewis’s Woodpeckers throughout the PNW using Motus wildlife tracking technology. This technology can be expanded to a variety of small-bodied wildlife and is helping to unravel the mystery of migration for many of these species. Kaly Adkins is a Regional Wildlife Diversity Biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in Bend that specializes in species of greatest conservation need east of the crest of the Cascades in Oregon. \nIf you want to learn more about MOTUS towers before the Birders’ Night\, you can listen to a podcast that Kaly did with Northwest Nature Matters on this topic. Here is the link to the podcast episode: http://nwnaturematters.libsyn.com/motus-a-collaborative-research-network-tracking-wildlife-movement \nThe program will start at 6pm. Feel free to come early for dinner and a beverage. There is typically a nice group there by 5:00pm or so. \nSeating is first come\, first serve\, so come early! \nAnd Worthy Brewing offers a nice Happy Hour Menu from 3-6pm.
