Habitat and Birds

The park is an island of grass and shade trees in an otherwise dry section of the Columbia River Gorge. There are also expansive views from the shoreline across the Columbia River, which here forms a reservior (Lake Celilo) behind The Dalles Dam. Both migrants and summer residents can be looked for in the park in season, and the Columbia River will attract many species of ducks and geese, and other water birds such as American Coot, Lesser Scaup, and American White Pelican, along with Ring-billed Gull. One caution when planning a trip is to check the forecast, as it can be quite windy along the river.
