Location
Diamond is located 12 miles east of Hwy 205 on Diamond Lane. There is a hotel in Diamond that offers a rustic stay and a true country experience. There is a store here and the people are very friendly.
DirectionsHabitat and Birds
Prime season here is late May through June, when there is still plenty of water in the hay fields throughout the Diamond Valley. These wet fields showcase a number of wetland bird species including White-faced Ibis, Wilson’s Phalaropes, Sandhill Cranes, stilts, avocets, herons, Yellow-headed Blackbirds, and many others. White-faced Ibis in particular are often seen up close and sometimes in big flocks.
One of the top attractions here are the Bobolinks which establish and defend territories throughout the valley. Listen for their distinctive bubbly song, delivered in an enthusiastic fluttery display flight over a field, only to disappear unseen back into the vegetation. If one is lucky, they may be seen perched on a fence close to the road.
A complete tour around the valley can be had by driving a series of roads: Diamond Lane on the south, Lava Beds Road on the west, Diamond Loop on the north, and Happy Valley Road on the east, forming a loop with a total of around 15 miles.
