Location
This area is located just a couple of miles south of Monmouth near Hwy 99W. To get there, head south on 99w, turn right (west) onto Stapleton Rd, then take a left on to Helmick Rd at the stop sign. Go about 1.5 miles and take a right on to Elkins Rd. Take Elkins Road west for about 5 miles as it snakes through farmland and a small creek. About halfway, Zumwalt Rd takes off to the right and is a gravel dead end road with some large oaks and forests in a quiet area.
DirectionsHabitat and Birds
The riparian areas and side trips on Zumwalt and Smith Roads can make for enjoyable birding. Birds at this location represent typical Polk farmland: raptors, winter waterfowl, sparrows and finches can be expected. Watch for woodpeckers and migrants in the riparian areas. Zumwalt has some good wood lots that can be good for passerines, and has been a good place to find Acorn Woodpeckers and occasionally Lewis’s Woodpeckers.
