Habitat and Birds

A walk through the picnic area can be productive for passerines, especially during migration and in winter. Gulls congregate at the dam’s outflow during non-breeding seasons. At times, egrets use the trees northeast of the parking lot as a roosting site. After major coastal storms, the view of the lake from the dam area across the road may yield sightings of such species as jaegers or storm-petrels blown inland by high winds. The park is gated off during the winter but parking is still available. A Falcated Duck was found here in 2004. Check the wigeon flocks for Eurasian Wigeon.
