Habitat and Birds

Fitton Green Natural area is a 306-acre park jointly managed by the Greenbelt Natural Trust and the Benton County Natural Areas and Parks division. It is set in the Coast Range foothills, and includes varied habitats from Douglas Fir forest, riparian areas, oak woodlands and savannas, remnants of old forest, and large areas of upland prairie. There are a number of trails available from which to explore the area.

Birds of the forest heard and seen year round include Black-capped and Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Pacific Wren, Dark-eyed Junco, Song Sparrow, and Spotted Towhee. The forests are also home for six species of woodpecker, including Acorn, and Pileated Woodpecker. In the spring, expect Orange-crowned, Black-throated Gray, Hermit, and Wilson’s Warbler, along with Western Tanager, Black-headed Grosbeak, and Lazuli Bunting. Chipping and White-crowned Sparrows may be found in the grasslands through the summer. Early in the year, Northern Pygmy, Barred, and Northern Saw-whet Owls may be heard.
