Location
From Philomath head west on SR 34 towards Waldport. After about 9 miles turn north on Mary’s Peak Rd. It’s about 9 miles to the top, with good birding all along the way. The last 4 miles is closed in winter, typically Dec 1 until Mar 31, but dates may vary depending on weather.

Mary’s Peak, at 4097 ft elevation, is the highest point in Oregon’s Coast Range, with great views of the Willamette Valley, the Coast Range and the Cascades. The flanks of the mountain are mostly forested, with open meadows in the upper elevations. Gray-crowned Rosy-Finches can sometimes be found in winter. Residents include Mountain Quail, Ruffed and Sooty Grouse, Northern Pygmy-Owl, Canada Jay and Red Crossbill. Other birds occasionally seen here include Hammond’s, Dusky and Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Clark’s Nutcracker, Wrentit, Lapland Longspur and Snow Bunting.
