Location
This campground is set up for horses and to give folks access to the Black Canyon Wilderness. It seems to be rarely used and has been empty on Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day Weekends. Head east out of Paulina on Hwy 380 for 3.6 miles. Take the left fork onto Beaver Creek Road. Drive 2.3 miles to Puett Rd, turn right. Bird along Puett Road! Drive 10.2 miles until FR 58. It is the first right turn you will see onto a narrow paved road. Drive up FR 58 until you hit the T interchange. Go left and follow signs to campground (about 6.25 miles). Turning right at the T will take you down to the South Fork of the John Day and Dayville.
DirectionsHabitat and Birds
At campground there is an old road that leaves the grounds on the eastern side (behind restrooms near corral). You can do a loop around CG if you take this road and go down and around the small reservoir. This is a great area for multiple woodpecker species. Along the old road there is a fork that goes slightly uphill to the left. The old clear-cut up there has singing Fox Sparrows. At the top of the hill you are in Grant County. The meadow near the reservoir should have Lincoln Sparrows singing in the spring. Walking down the access trail to Black Canyon will soon put you in Wheeler County.
