Habitat and Birds

The Pittock Mansion is a stately house built in 1912 with a commanding view of Portland, Cascade peaks and the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers.  The grounds are part of the Portland park system and have second-growth mixed forest as well as ornamental plantings.

In winter, watch for Varied Thrush, Red Crossbill and Pine Siskin.  In summer, Vaux’s Swifts can be seen overhead and Violet-green Swallows often nest in the nearby neighborhood.  Red-breasted Sapsucker, Hutton’s Vireo, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Black-headed Grosbeak and Wilson’s Warbler nest there.  The area is also very good for migrant songbirds.  Over the years many local rarities have been found from there including Long-tailed Jaeger, White-tailed Kite, Golden Eagle, Acorn Woodpecker, Mountain Chickadee, Pine Grosbeak, Cassin’s Finch and Northern Parula.

Note that the grounds can be busy on weekends with visitors.
