Habitat and Birds

Very birdy. Ash-throated, Gray Flycatcher, Say’s Phoebe, Western Kingbird. If you can continue on to Quinn Road, do so, but you may have to return to Highway 19. Possible species here include Lark Sparrow, Ferruginous Hawk, Ring-necked Pheasant, California Quail, Lazuli Bunting, Great Horned Owl, Spotted Towhee, Canyon and Rock Wren, Mountain Bluebird and (if you’re lucky) Gray Partridge. In the first one half mile west of Hwy. 19 the habitat is a canyon with water where Yellow-breasted Chat and Bullock’s Oriole are abundant in spring and summer. This is also a good place to look for Bushtit. Sage Thrasher is possible. Watch for raptors. Notable from this location were Pinyon Jays.

As you continue on this road, you will enter into agricultural fields. Watch the fence lines for sparrows. The road will drop down into a hollow of juniper trees, sage and a small, very seasonal creek. Look for Lark Sparrow and Gray Flycatcher as well as other sage/juniper species. Nothing notable at this area of the road but might have some potential and worth a stop.
