Intermountain West Shorebird Surveys

Wednesday February 18, 2026

Dear Shorebirders,

It’s that time of year again! Spring migration is just around the corner, and the Intermountain West Shorebird Survey returns April 24th-30th! You are part of a regional shorebird conservation network with more than 300 participants surveying more than 200 survey sites in 11 states. 2026 is our last planned year of full-scale regional surveys so help us finish strong!

Please let us know if you plan to participate in April by filling out this form →
Returning volunteers will receive priority for sites they surveyed in the past. If you cannot participate this season, please let us know and forward this email to other qualified observers. Thanks again for making shorebirds count!
How can you help?
1 We need more shorebird observers!
Share this email with biologists, chapter members, birders, or anyone else who might be interested in counting shorebirds or recording data.
2 Save the dates!
1 Now-March: Sign up for surveys!
2 March-April 15th: Site assignment coordination
3 April 24th – April 30th, 2026: Spring 2026 Peak Shorebird Survey Window – get out and count shorebirds
4 Summer 2026 – Stay tuned for a webinar on survey results (date TBD)
5 August 9th – August 22nd, 2026: Fall 2026 Peak Shorebird Survey Window – get out and count shorebirds

Interested in conducting additional shorebird surveys at your sites? Consider contributing to the International Shorebird Survey Program

Ideal shorebird surveyors:
• Can identify shorebirds in breeding and non-breeding plumage,
• Have a passion for birds and time outdoors,
• Can commit to one survey day in the spring and one survey day in the fall, and allow some flexibility for scheduling around bad weather,
• Will be safety conscience and cooperate with field partners,
• Can collect high quality data in the field.
