Location
The Amity – Bellevue Highway (Hwy 153) runs west from 5th Street in Amity 7 miles to Bellevue. At 1.5 miles the road looks down on the Yamhill River bottom lands. In wet times there is a flooded area that can harbor shorebirds and waterfowl. In another mile, a bridge crosses the South Yamhill river. Further west the highway crosses open fields. Eventually it turns north through a dip to cross Deer Creek, then turns west again to reach Bellevue on Hwy 18 west of McNinnville.
DirectionsHabitat and Birds
The wet bottom land has resident Bald Eagles, an Osprey nest, wintering hawks and waterfowl, including Great Egret, Tundra Swans, and Snow Geese. At the bridge in summer Northern Rough-0winged Swallows nest in the river bank. In the open fields further west wintering hawks and sometimes American Pipits can be found. At the crossing of Deer Creek a marsh hosts Virginia Rails year round. The oaks at the last farm before Bellevue host Acorn Woodpeckers, White-breasted Nuthatches, and Bullock’s Orioles.
