Note that using google maps to the coordinates for the hotspot will usually not work. From N Lombard St, turn south onto N Portsmouth. After 0.5 mile turn right onto N Willamette Blvd, go one block and turn left onto N Van Houten Ave and in 0.1 mile follow the road making a sharp right onto N Van Houten Pl. There are railroad tracks that are still active. You can park on the side of the road either before or after them.

Note that there has been construction on an adjacent area that may affect this hotspot in the future. There is a large open field with a fence around it but one can walk around it. In spring, Western Bluebird, Mountain Bluebird (rare), Say’s Phoebe and Western Kingbird have all been found there. In winter the river can be good for ducks and grebes but this is probably Multnomah County’s best site for gulls. 10 different gull species have been found there. Typically 100-150 gulls congregate there, most often in the afternoons, and this is where Multnomah County’s only documented Lesser Black-Backed Gull was found.
The area north of the railroad bridge can be good for passerines (the land by Willamette Cove on google maps), but this area is contaminated and one should be careful with accessing it.
