Habitat and Birds

Several forest trails spring from the arboretum grounds exposing birders to a nice sample of upper elevation Willamette Valley forest.  Mixed stands of fir and white oak provide a perfect setting for a morning of birding.  Anna’s Hummingbirds are present year-round while Red-breasted Sapsuckers are most abundant in summer.  Other woodpeckers include Acorn, Downy, Hairy, Pileated, and Northern Flicker.  Pacific-slope is the dominant flycatcher but Hammonds, Willow, and Western Wood-pewee can be found in summer.  Hutton’s Vireo, Steller’s Jay, both chickadees, Violet-green Swallow, Pacific and Bewick’s Wren, Swainson’s Thrush (summer), Varied Thrush (winter), and Lazuli Bunting are but a few examples of the 110 species observed here.
