From US 30, turn west onto NW Watson Rd. After 0.8 miles stay left at a fork onto NW Gilkison Rd. Take that 1.6 miles until it ends. This is a private retreat that welcomes guests. One can walk around a gate and head into the woods and clearcuts.

This is a nice area to spend some time exploring the many trails that go both through woods and clearcuts. It has become the best place in the county to find Mountain Quail and Canada Jay. Other birds in the area include Band-tailed Pigeon, Anna’s and Rufous Hummingbirds, Northern Pygmy-Owl, various woodpeckers; Olive-sided, Willow, and Pacific-slope Flycatchers and Western Wood-pewee; Common Raven; Varied and Swainson’s Thrushes; Evening Grosbeak; MacGillivray’s Warbler; Western Tanager; and Black-headed Grosbeak.
