Hummingbird Garden at Bend’s Orchard Park

Project Description

Hummingbird Garden, Bend’s Orchard Park
2001 NE 6th Street

A brand-new garden that broke ground in Spring 2025, is all about attracting hummingbirds.  Located in Bend’s Orchard Park, it is a demonstration garden, and the first of its kind in Central Oregon. It was designed to specifically illustrate how to attract hummingbirds in our own residential gardens using native plants.
Inspiration for this garden came from Barb Rumer, former President of Pollinator Pathway Bend (PPB) and the design concept originated from Gwen Bartonek, the current President of PPB.  The project was funded by Bend Parks and Rec and the native plants were sourced from  WIntercreek Nursery and Great Basin Nursery in Bend, and also from local private gardens.
This collaborative project also includes volunteers from ECBA and Wild Birds Unlimited who provide enthusiastic volunteers willing to donate time maintaining the garden on a regular basis.

Why We Do This and What We Have Learned

This project helps push back continuing threats of habitat loss, invasive species and our changing climate.  Central Oregon’s birds depend on our help to increase biodiversity through connected corridors of diverse pesticide-free and native habitat. Projects like these are a great way to engage and connect Bend’s communities to better understand the benefits of protected natural spaces.

What Volunteers Do

Volunteers are needed throughout the growing season to help care for this garden.  A regular routine will be maintained and all levels of expertise are welcomed along with an abundance of enthusiasm as well as a tolerance for weeding and dirt under fingernails.

Project Focus Areas

  • Habitat Restoration/Improvement
