OSPREY WATCH is a global community science project that tracks osprey nesting activity over time. Think Wild is leading local efforts here in Central Oregon with participation from ECBA volunteers. Observing, monitoring nests, and submitting data on a regular basis contributes to a much larger data base that is growing all the time.
To learn about becoming an osprey nest watcher and to sign up, go to: https://www.thinkwildco.org/ospreywatch/ As a member of OSPREY WATCH, your data will be used to help monitor and better understand the impact of changes in our environment and how they affect these beloved birds.
Below is an article from Think Wild that describes in detail the consequences of serious injury to the birds from using hazardous human-made materials such as baling twine, fishing line or other trash for nest building.
This last link is to a brochure about OSPREY ENTANGLEMENT with more detailed information about how you can help. Here is information that can be useful to us humans about how to report hazardous nests to the closest power companies (Pacific Power and Central Electric Cooperative CEC). Our local power companies have learned to become surprisingly skilled in the ways to help. This brochure also has Think Wild’s contact information. And you can call ECBA (to leave a message at 541-241-2190 or email us at ecba@ecbirds.org with concerns that are not strictly emergencies.)
And spread the word!
